In this 1.5-hour class we will brew one coffee grown by Heavenly Hawaiian. We will experiment with two different brew methods and do a side-by-side taste comparison to find the brew you like most! We will introduce the principles behind the differences in flavor/aroma and texture produced by these two common coffee preparation methods in order to arm you with the information and tools necessary to replicate your favorite brew at home.

Mainland Campus Coffee Tasting Class: Comparing Roast Levels

This beginner level coffee cupping class introduces basic cupping practices for roast evaluation to students with beginner to intermediate level knowledge of coffee cupping.

In this 90 minute class we will run through a quick cupping protocol refresher on SCA cupping procedure and etiquette, and then we’ll cup three sets of coffees roasted to varying levels of darkness. Evaluating roast level is a key skill for any coffee roaster or barista.

This coffee cupping class is great for anyone who is interested in digging a little deeper into coffee tasting.

In this Kona coffee tasting workshop, participants will learn how to identify coffee with defects; 10% Kona blends vs 100% Kona coffee; coffee that has been stored improperly; and coffee that has been pre-ground. A 90-minute coffee brewing workshop will follow the tasting, specifically geared towards learning to brew great coffee at home. This workshop is perfect for coffee lovers who are beginners or intermediate in their coffee knowledge and want to take their coffee skills to the next level.

2-Hour Coffee Brewing Class: Extraction Principles

In this two-hour class we will introduce the concept of “solubles yield” and how it affects the flavor of brewed coffee. We will introduce quantitative methods for tracking both strength and flavor, and will practice identifying the flavor characteristics associated with properly brewed coffee.

2-Hour Coffee Tasting: Introduction to Coffee Cupping

Professional coffee tasting is a bit more complicated than just deciding whether a coffee is “good” or “bad”. In this 2-hour workshop we will sample six coffees while introducing the Specialty Coffee Association’s formal coffee tasting procedure known as cupping. Cupping is a globally standardized protocol for objectively evaluating coffee quality.

Coffee Tasting Class: SCA Cupping Protocol

2019 Hawai’i Coffee Champs Preliminary Competitions

As this year’s first US Coffee Championships Prelim, the Hawaii Coffee Association is kicking off the 2019-2020 National Competition season in Honolulu and inviting competitors from across the Hawaiian islands and the U.S. mainland to join us.

There are two competitions happening at the 2019 Hawaii Coffee Champs: Brewers Cup and Barista. Competitors are welcome to register for one or both competitions. If you would like to compete in both, you will need to complete two separate registrations, one for each competition.

24th Annual Hawaii Coffee Association Conference

The HCA conference will run Thursday through Saturday, July 25-27.

Thursday will feature a no-host welcome cocktail reception beginning at 5:30 PM.

Friday will be a full day (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) of speakers, sessions, and events.

Saturday will be another full day (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) of speakers, sessions, and events, culminating with dinner and the announcement of the 11th annual cupping competition winners.

On Friday and Saturday during the conference we will have workshops on soil health, fermentation with yeasts, roasting and cupping workshops, and speaker sessions.  We will also be hosting a US Coffee Champs Preliminary Barista and Brewers Cup Competitions, and going on tours of the Kō Hana Rum Company, and the Hawai’i Agriculture Research Center (HARC) in Kunia with a field tour of their ongoing research projects.

Coffee Tasting Class: Basic Tastes in Coffee

Join us at New World Cafe in Raleigh, NC for this introductory coffee tasting class focusing on basic tasting skills. This class is for anyone with an interest in gaining a better understanding of how to taste and describe coffee.

Kona Coffee Brewing Workshop at Heavenly Hawaiian

PCR is proud to partner with Heavenly Hawaiian to deliver a weekly Kona coffee brewing workshop held every Monday at 1pm on their farm in Holualoa. Afterwards, feel free to hang out at the farm, taste more coffee, candy, honey, or any of Heavenly Hawaiian’s other treats. You can also hop on a free tour of the farm!
