If you are interested in learning how to roast coffee, there is no better place to do it than at origin in Hawaii! Join us at our lab in South Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii for one of our coffee roasting classes and gain insight into the physical and chemical changes that occur during the coffee roasting process. These classes focus on connecting the specifics of the roasting process to flavors in the cup, and will give you the knowledge needed to begin developing and executing perfect coffee roast profiles at home.
1-Hr Connecting Roast Level and Flavor
Explore the influence of roast level on coffee flavor and texture. We will taste three samples of a single coffee: one light roast, one medium roast, and one dark roast. This workshop will take place in the cupping room, and does not include hands-on roasting, but is designed help students understand how to roast coffee to achieve a specific flavor profile.
1-Hr Tasting Roast Events
Go beyond dark vs light and explore how adjusting the timing and temperature of drying, Maillard reactions, caramelization, and first crack can influence coffee flavor and texture. We will taste and compare three samples of the same coffee, each roasted to the same level of darkness, but with different roast profile curves. This workshop will take place in the cupping room, and does not include hands-on roasting, but is designed help students understand how to roast coffee to achieve a specific flavor profile.
2-Hr Tasting the Roast Profile
Register for both our roast level and roast profile tasting workshops as a bundle and save! This bundle includes two coffee cuppings (formal tastings) of three coffees each, and covers detailed information on how to roast coffee to achieve a specific flavor profile.
4-Hr Profile Roasting Basics
Understand the process of developing roast profiles. This workshop includes 2 hours of coffee cupping (formal tasting) to understand the flavor differences created by various coffee roasting profiles, and 2 hours of hands-on roasting time on our 500g North sample roaster. Students will get to take home whatever coffee they roast during the class!
8-Hr How to Roast Coffee 101
A comprehensive survey of coffee roasting theory, practical skills, quality analysis, safety and hygiene procedures, packaging and freshness. This class is designed to give students all the knowledge they need to get consistently delicious results from their home coffee roaster, or even start their own coffee roasting business. Includes 2-3 hours of classroom time, and 4-5 hours of roasting on both the 500g North sample roaster and the 15kg Giesen W15A production roaster.
