Kolum Opints, Wahgi Valley
This coffee is from the Kolum Opints Plantation and Wet Mill, located in the Banz area of the Waghi Valley. The farm is 204 hectares in size, with about 500,000 coffee trees grown. Cherries are harvested from March to July and traditionally washed, fermented for 24–48 hours, and dried on raised beds for 10–14 days.
Sourcing coffee in Papua New Guinea presents unique challenges due to the country’s vast cultural and linguistic diversity, limited infrastructure, and remote communities. Through a long-standing partnership with exporter Monpi and on-the-ground relationship-building by Café Imports’ Piero Cristiani, specialty coffee programs like this have emerged—fostering quality improvements and greater earning potential for producers like Kenneth Opints who are committed to producing exceptional coffee.
This is the first parchment dried (washed) coffee from Papua New Guinea we have showcased in a while, usually opting for the fruit-bombs of the fruit dried ones. However, the smooth mouthfeel combined with the fruity and nutty qualities of this coffee are a delightful addition to our line-up of coffees here at PCR.
