Join Pacific Coffee Research as we host a full-day Q Arabica Grader Calibration on Thursday, March 14th! This calibration is for current Licensed Q Arabica Graders who need to re-calibrate to renew their license.

CQI’s Q Coffee System is an internationally recognized program for evaluating cup quality based on a standardized system for Arabica coffee using protocols developed by the SCA. A Q Arabica Grader is a highly trained and calibrated coffee taster who evaluates coffee using SCA cupping standards and protocols.

Q Graders must calibrate their coffee evaluation skills every three years. Coffee Calibration verifies their abilities to accurately evaluate coffee quality based upon the globally accepted standards for Fine Robusta and/or Specialty Arabica. Calibration validates a Grader’s skill as well as commitment to quality.

The calibration consists of three cupping flights with distinct attributes. All Q Graders must demonstrate calibration by passing at least two of the three flights as well as participate in a Flavor Calibration Exam. The Flavor Calibration is based on participation but is subject to change in the future. Upon passing, the Q Grader certificate is valid for thirty-six (36) months from the date all exams are successfully completed.

    About the course:

This course will be held on an active farm in Hawai’i. Due to the presence of coffee leaf rust on the islands, all students will be asked to take specific hygienic measures to help mitigate the spread of the fungus. All students will receive directions for preventative measures to take when on the property for this course. If you have any questions about these protocols before registering, please reach out to Madeleine for more information: [email protected]

    About the Educator:

Our instructor for this course is Sandra Elisa Loofbourow, a certified Q Instructor through CQI, a seasoned green buyer, roaster, barista, and published author. Sandra was a founding Director of The Crown: Royal Coffee Lab & Tasting Room, and is co-host of the bilingual podcast Cafetera Intelectual. Through Loupe Coffee Consulting, she is working to build a sustainable, ethical, and quality-focused coffee supply chain.

PCR’s Madeleine Longoria Garcia will be your assistant instructor for this course.
