Brewing Foundation – SCA Certificate Course (in-person learning)

The SCA Brewing Foundation course is designed to introduce core brewing skills to people with little to no previous brewing experience. Through guided tasting, hands-on practice, and practical discussion, you’ll learn how different brew methods and key brewing variables shape flavor and then apply that knowledge to consistently produce a balanced, tasty cup across a range of devices, from manual brewers to automatic gravity brewers.
This course is designed for anyone new to professional brewing (or home brewers looking to build a stronger technical foundation) who wants repeatable results and a clear framework for dialing in a coffee.
What you’ll learn

Brewing methods & equipment: Compare common brew styles and learn best practices for using a variety of brewers.

Brewing fundamentals: Understand the essential brewing elements (dose, grind, water, time, agitation) and how they affect extraction and flavor.

Taste and evaluation: Identify common flavor outcomes from different methods and learn how to assess results and adjust your recipe accordingly.
Outcome
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to choose an appropriate brew method, follow a recipe with the right tools, and make informed adjustments based on what you taste, building confidence and consistency in any brewed-coffee setting.
Additional Details:
- This full-day course runs from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
- Registration includes: SCA certificate cost, lunch, snacks, refreshments, and coffees.
- Final Exam: Upon course completion, students have 21 days to take the SCA Sensory Skills Foundation written exam online.
